For my Father's Day talk today I'm gonna start off with some dumb dad jokes. Why do dads that golf take an extra pair of socks to the golf course? Just in case they get a hole in one. What do you call your dad when he falls through the ice? A popsicle.
The author of fatherless America has observed today American society is fundamentally divided and ignorant about the fatherhood idea. Some people do not even remember it, others are offended by it. Others including more than a few families scholars neglect it misunderstand it. Many others are not especially opposed to it nor are they especially committed to it. Many people wish we could act on it but believe that our society simply no longer can or will. And here are some percentages. Involved dads have a direct impact on your children. Children who grow up with involved fathers are 39% more likely to earn mostly A's in school and 40% less likely to repeat a grade. 60% less likely to be suspended or expelled from school, twice as likely to go to college or find a stable job and 70% less likely to have a teen birth. 80% less likely spend time in jail.
As a church we believe in fathers we believe in the ideal of the man who puts his family first. We believe that by divine design fathers are to reside over their families in love and righteousness. And are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their family. We believe that fathers our unique and irreplaceable.
One funny story about my dad is one time he went to make chocolate chip cookies and my mom and sister were gone So, we didn't have much help. I think his cookies would have turned out great except that flour and powdered sugar look a lot of like. And that can cause problems. When his cookies came out of the oven, they didn't even look like cookies because he used powdered sugar instead of flour. Our cookies looked horrible. They were flat and I couldn't tell what it was supposed to be. My dad tried really hard but without help his cookies turned out pitiful.
Without guidance and a father's help there would be a lot of things we wouldn't know how to do in life. Just like how my dad needed help making cookies. Jesus says, "greater love hath no man than greater than this, that a man lay down his life, for his friends."
Fathers can show their love as they lay down their lives day by day. Laboring and the service and supporting of their families. One of the most important things for a father is to turn the hearts of his children to their Heavenly Father. Fathers are to teach God's law to each generation.
I feel so lucky to have a dad that is hard working and always puts family first. I'm also really thankful for an example that my grandpa showed me throughout my life. I love my dad so much because whenever he gets home from work, he always wants to spend time with me, whether it's as simple as playing catch or talking to me.
He always makes sure that I feel loved and valued. When I am on the soccer field, I can always hear my dad's voice cheering me on. He works so hard for our family and I want to be like him someday. Throughout this Father's Day make sure to do something nice to your father, whether it's a simple as saying I love you or giving him a big hug. Make sure that you are kind to your father's and tell him how much you love him. I'd like to say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
